Walker-Spivey Elementary School
Project: Seeds of Renewal - Transforming our Global Garden
Project Description / Scope of Work
Seeds of Renewal is a schoolwide garden initiative serving PreK–5 students (224 total) that combines hands-on learning with compassion, service, and community engagement. Through the project, students will experience the complete process of growing food — from planting seeds and caring for crops to harvesting produce — while learning that gardens can cultivate not only plants, but also kindness, responsibility, and generosity.

The project will expand the school garden from four to six raised beds while incorporating native plants, a butterfly garden, and a remembrance tree honoring a staff member. Each grade level will maintain its own garden bed, helping students understand the patience, teamwork, and care required to nurture living things. Harvested produce will be donated to a local food pantry, giving students the opportunity to see firsthand how their efforts can positively impact families within their community.

In partnership with the second-grade team, the Walker-Spivey Garden Club will help lead and oversee the implementation of the project, ensuring strong curriculum connections and meaningful student engagement throughout the process.
Student Engagement & Learning
Through active participation, students will:
-
Plant, maintain, and harvest fruits and vegetables
-
Observe plant growth and insect life cycles
-
Reflect through writing, drawing, and classroom discussions
-
Develop teamwork and shared responsibility
-
Learn how gardening can serve others and strengthen communities
Students will also gain a deeper understanding of compassion, gratitude, and community connection as they witness how their work can help support families in need. The project strengthens science, math, and literacy skills through meaningful, real-world learning experiences.
Purpose & Impact
The purpose of Seeds of Renewal is to foster both academic growth and human connection. Students will learn that caring for plants reflects the same patience, attention, and kindness required to care for people. Beyond classroom learning, the project strengthens relationships between the school and the broader community as students share harvests, collaborate with families, and develop a lasting sense of responsibility, service, and pride in contributing to the well-being of others.

This project will:
-
Increase student engagement and hands-on learning
-
Develop and expand academic skills across subject areas
-
Build empathy, teamwork, and responsibility
-
Promote healthy living and environmental stewardship
-
Help students understand the human impact of giving back
By transforming the garden, students also transform themselves — developing compassion, confidence, and a deeper understanding of how small acts of care can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
