Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this project is to provide students with authentic, hands-on learning in fruit crop production and environmental stewardship.
Key Learnings Intended:
-
Apply scientific knowledge to soil testing, pH management, and nutrient application.
-
Learn proper planting, pruning, and trellising techniques for fruit crops.
-

Impact on Students:
Students will gain valuable experience in plant and soil science, preparing them for agricultural, horticultural, and environmental careers. The project fosters responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving as students plan, install, and maintain the production area.

Impact on School and Community:
This fruit production area will serve as a lasting educational resource for Eastern Wayne High School. It will enhance the Agricultural Education curriculum, increase agricultural literacy among students, and strengthen community ties through produce donations and outreach.

Narrative / Scope of Work
The Eastern Wayne FFA Fruit Production Area will establish a permanent outdoor learning space that includes grapevines, blueberries, and fig trees to teach students about fruit crop production, soil science, pruning, and sustainable agriculture. This hands-on project will transform an underutilized area of campus into a functional mini orchard and vineyard.

Students enrolled in Horticulture I & II and CTE Advanced Studies classes will design the planting layout, prepare the site, install trellises for grapevines, and amend the soil for blueberries and figs. The area will be used for ongoing instruction in plant propagation, pH management, nutrient application, and integrated pest management.

The project will also serve as a long-term Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) site for FFA members, allowing them to collect data on plant growth, soil fertility, and fruit yield. Once established, harvested fruit will be used for educational demonstrations and donated to local food pantries, reinforcing FFA’s mission of leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
