Project: Blooming with Kindness

Application Request/Project Summary:

Blooming with Kindness

The “Blooming with Kindness” project at Neuse Charter School has three main purposes. First, this project creates an opportunity for our Occupational Course for Study students to have an outdoor classroom that enables them to learn various vocational skills. Additionally, the students through learning floral arrangement, will donate mini arrangements to our neighbors, The Landing Nursing Home in Smithfield, and to our school staff which fulfills the volunteer component of their program. Lastly, the space would beautify a neglected area of our campus, allowing other grade levels to enjoy this newly renovated outdoor space. Neuse Charter School is a small, but mighty independent, publicly funded school that believes in “Every Child, Every Day”. Funding this project would open doors to many students for years to come.

Our project will focus on a space to the left front of the Main Gym entrance which is unused, neglected, and unsightly. Our Main Gym is a very important part of our campus, we host athletics, the K-1 carpool is in front of this area, and our Graduation ceremony is also here. It is a focal point where many people from the community gather.

The “Blooming with Kindness” project will create and maintain an outdoor learning space for our OCS students to study horticulture and floral design to meet their high school program's employability and vocational skills. Through this project, the Occupational Course of Study EC teacher will invite local florists and area nursery experts to participate in teaching students basic floral and landscaping skills. Once the garden is installed, students will use the floral materials from the garden to create mini floral arrangements to donate to The Landings, a nursing home facility in our neighborhood. Students will also use the mini arrangements to give to school staff for birthdays, special events, or just as a “thank you”. Our project will incorporate plant material for each season so the students can utilize the Blooming with Kindness outdoor learning space year around.
