Project: Kindergarten Butterfly Garden

Socrates Academy Charter School seeks to create a vibrant Butterfly Garden outside or our Kindergarten Hallway. This project aims to enhance the educational environment, foster a connection to nature, and instill a sense of responsibility among students and their families. Specifically in the budgeting of the garden, we plan on acquiring the essential materials to create a successful butterfly attractant area such as butterfly bushes, milkweed seeds, birdhouses, and other native butterfly attractents.

Our project objectives include:

1) Educational Enhancement - The Butterfly Garden will serve as an outdoor classroom providing students with hands-on learning experience about the life cycle of butterflies, pollination and the importance of native plants.

2) Environmental Awareness - Through the incorporation of native plants and butterfly attractants, the project aims to promote biodiversity and raise awareness about the significance of preserving local ecosystems.

3) Community Engagement - Involving parents in the maintenance of the garden establishes a sense of community responsibility and creates a sustainable model for the upkeep of the space in future years.

Project Work / Completion

On April 4th, 2024 we held a special Kindergarten Butterfly Garden Workday to create “A Sunny Place,” a memorial garden dedicated to Sunny Williams, a scholar who passed away in May 2024 due to a rare brain tumor.

With the support of families and students from Kindergarten through high school, we planted milkweed, fennel, butterfly bushes, and wildflowers, transforming this space into a vibrant tribute. A mural is currently in progress, and mulch has been spread around the plants to protect them through winter.

The garden has been adopted by a Girl Scout and a grandparent who is a master gardener, who will care for the area for the remainder of the year, adding plants as needed to ensure it continues to flourish.
