Project Summary
On Saturday, March 1st State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) and Keep North Carolina Beautiful© teamed up with Keep Durham Beautiful to enhance the beauty of Sandy Creek Park in Durham, NC. In addition to over 20 employees from SECU, KNCB, and KDB, over 20 members of SECU joined in to assist with the project.
Sandy Creek Park is located on the site of one of Durham's old sewage treatment plants. In the 1990's a Master Plan was written to create an environmental park on the site. In the early 2000's Durham Parks & Recreation put in restrooms and picnic facilities. Most of the recent improvements to the park are the result of grants that the park has received and the hard work of hundreds of volunteers.
Many of the improvements to the park are the result of thousands of hours of volunteer work as well as thousands of dollars in donations, and the two wonderful nonprofits, the Durham Parks Foundation and Keep Durham Beautiful. Sandy Creek Park is considered a "birding hotspot" with over 185 species of birds having been spotted within the park!
Collectively, the group worked on renovating the pollinator garden, planting flower bulbs, and cleaning up the trails, sidewalks, and pathways. Additionally, a team of folks worked on eradicating some invasive plant species from the park and received quite the education of how those plants multiply, and the importance of trying to minimize and eliminate them.
