Project: Petals with Purpose – Teaching Cut Flower Production

Window of Opportunity Grant Project Page

Application Request/Project Summary:

Purpose
The purpose of this grant application is to fund the installation of a cut flower production area on-campus at Lakewood High School. This project will allow students enrolled in agricultural education courses the opportunity to research cut flower practices, use decision making skills regarding cut flower varieties, and develop skills related to cut flower production, harvesting, and floral design. This project will support student learning in the classroom by providing a unique opportunity for skill development, along with an opportunity to connect with the local community by offering a venue for fresh cut flowers.

Narrative/Scope of Work
Preparation, purchasing, and installation of the cut flower production area will be conducted by students enrolled in our Horticulture I & II courses. Throughout the spring and summer months, students will plant, maintain, and harvest flowers grown in this area. In our Horticulture I courses, students will focus on soil development, selecting flower varieties, planting, and harvesting. In our higher level Horticulture II courses, students will focus on the floral design aspects of cut flower products - including the creation of bouquets, boutonnieres/corsages, and unique flower arrangements.
Once harvest begins, students will use the plant material to develop floral arrangements for instructional use and for community engagement.
