Project: Growing Minds Garden

Application Request/Project Summary:

Growing Minds Garden

The proposed garden space will serve as a multi-functional learning environment for our special education students and a peaceful haven for staff and students alike. This thoughtfully planned space will provide educational opportunities, emotional growth, and a calming outdoor environment for both students and teachers.

This garden includes distinct areas:

  • A vegetable and herb garden where students can plant, nurture, and observe growth, connecting them to the natural world and learning responsibility.

  • A flagstone patio offering a flexible outdoor classroom area, perfect for group discussions, activities, and sensory experiences.

  • Flowering plants and bushes that will provide visual stimulation and a calming atmosphere while fostering lessons about plant life cycles and care.

This garden will not only expose students to new environments and experiences but will also provide a unique platform for teaching social-emotional skills. By caring for plants, students will learn about patience, nurturing, and recognizing their own needs as they see the parallel between plant care and self-care. The garden will serve as a safe, calming, space for students to reflect, learn, and grow - both academically and personally. In addition to its benefits for students, the garden will also serve as a haven for teachers during breaks, meetings, or moments when they need to step away. It will provide a beautiful and peaceful space where staff can relax, calm themselves, and center their thoughts, promoting well-being and mindfulness.

Ultimately this project aims to give our students meaningful connections to nature while enriching their educational experience and offering a restorative space for the entire school community.

Project Summary, Development & Completion Photos

Growing Minds Garden

The sensory garden created a calming and engaging outdoor learning space that supported my students’ sensory, social-emotional, and academic growth. Students utilized the garden as a safe environment to regulate emotions, practice coping strategies, and engage with nature through hands-on sensory experiences.

The garden encouraged communication, exploration, and curiosity while providing meaningful opportunities to work on skills such as following directions, identifying colors and plants, counting, and making observations. It also increased student engagement and provided a therapeutic space that supported the diverse sensory needs of students in my special education classroom.
