Project: Beatify the Bee Hive Circle Garden
Application Request/Project Summary:
Beautify the Bee Hive

Purpose of this Project:
One objective is to enhance the appearance of our school through the circle garden, which is visible to both students and staff on a daily basis, as it is located in the courtyard. Additionally, it is seen by visitors attending events such as sports and graduation. Currently, the garden is overrun with weeds and requires significant improvement, as it serves as a major focal point for our school. Furthermore, the main entrance has the potential to be more inviting to students, staff, and the community, particularly as our school hosts monthly board meetings.
As a student-driven project, this initiative will foster a sense of belonging among students at our school, particularly for those who may feel they have limited options. It will also instill a sense of pride in our school and community. These projects are poised to create a lasting impact on both our school and the surrounding community.
Scope of work:
The school features a circular garden in the courtyard that has unfortunately been neglected for many years. Although there was an initial effort to revitalize the garden, which included the placement of a mascot statue, it has since fallen into disrepair due to various challenges. This area is prominently viewed by attendees during sporting events and graduation ceremonies, making its revival a worthwhile endeavor. With the supplies outlined in my proposal, I believe we can successfully restore it.
Additionally, the front entrance of the school experiences a high volume of visitor traffic. Introducing durable cement planters filled with plants in this area would significantly enhance its curb appeal for guests. The supplies for the entrance area are also included. The planters vary in price, as the primary requirement is that they must be constructed from cement to ensure durability, given the number of visitors and high school students in attendance. Any remaining funds will be allocated toward enhancing the project with additional plants, such as shrubs.
Expected student learnings of the project:
Students will participate in a hands-on experience involving the planting, watering, and care of plants. They will learn to collaborate on timelines, define roles and tasks, and address challenges such as plant health issues or design adjustments. Students will develop their communication skills and teamwork abilities through collaboration with their peers. Additionally, they will learn to effectively manage disagreements and achieve consensus during the decision-making process.
Students will learn to take responsibility for maintaining the garden, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their contributions to the school's improvement. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of green spaces and their contribution to the environment, including the significance of pollinators. They will also learn how to utilize sustainable materials and promote resource conservation.
Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with teachers, parents, and local experts to enhance their learning about the importance of fostering a welcoming and positive atmosphere while utilizing the natural elements and resources available in their community. Additionally, this initiative will provide older students with the chance to develop leadership skills as they guide younger peers or take on leadership roles within various aspects of the project.
Students will gain an understanding of how design impacts first impressions and community perception by developing a meaningful design that embodies school values or history, while also ensuring that pathways are inclusive and accessible for all visitors.
